Renowned film lyricist Girish Puthenchery passed away on Feb 10, 2010. This 48 year old poet has contributed to some of Malayalam’s best known songs. There are very few Malayalis who have not heard or at least hummed the lyrics of Girish’s songs in movies such as Nandanam, Ore Kadal, RavanaPrabhu and Vadakkumnathan. Girish had also scripted for blockbuster hits such as “Vadakkunnathan.” He wrote lyrics for over 2,500 songs spanning more than 300 Malayalam films.
Music never dies. It becomes a sanctuary for those who love it. It becomes an ocean for those who want to dive in and gather the pearls from the deepest, darkest depths. For those who loved Girish’s poetry, the lines will come alive again and again with a bittersweet remembrance of all that he represented through every word. That is perhaps the greatest tribute we can offer to this great Malayali lyricist.
We will miss you, Girish, but your music will never pass away from our hearts.
Our prayers extend to your family, loved ones, colleagues and fans so that they find the courage to overcome the pain of this loss.
May your soul rest in everlasting peace as you dive into another world to gather another birth for many more pearls.
I have heard so much about Girish Puthenchery on twitter after he passed away. Was wondering if you could translate some of his fine works for all of us who dont understand the language to be able to enjoy his mastery too.
It will be a great loss to Malayalam film industry and also to Music Lovers like us.. I think a huge budget film is going to happened in Heaven, may be thts y they need a lyricist.
May his soul rest in peace…
We all miss him… But his songs never gonna die..
@Priya: I treasure your feedback and will surely try to work on doing that though I am not sure the real poetic mastery can be manifested again. Thank you for this suggestion.
@Milin Paul: Yes, you are right. It is a huge loss for all of us but it is such a blessing that all of us who love his songs truly believe that his songs will live on and so will the name of Girish Puthencherry remain a humming melody on our lips.
