Competition works. This realization became strong when I visited IIM Ahmedabad last week. There was a one-on-one contest in which competitors had to keep their hand on a slab of ice. The organizers had tested it on themselves and thought it would be too tough for anybody to stand the trial for a minute. Eventually, all contenders ended up being too tough for the ice to have any impact on them. If the need to perform can get the best out of us, then competition is good. Isn’t it?
How Competition Works
When we are under pressure, the need to perform eliminates the option of failure. This is the way in which competition works.
- We stop fearing defeat and focus on winning.
- We realise that there are no limits to our strength.
- We explore the possibilities of success more deeply.
Is Competition Good or Bad?
One must recognize that competition is good only if we perceive it from the right angle. One needs to understand that:
- Not being the winner in a competition does not make you a loser.
- People are unique. They do it their own way. You give your best when you do it your way.
- You do not compete for anything or for anybody. Enjoy competing and you will always win.
Why Competition is Good
- Competition is good if you can make friends with your competitors. If not, at least respect them for what they do and earn respect.
- If competition is healthy, it can be a great source of inspiration and learning. Set new benchmarks and keep trying harder.
- Competition is a good thing if it sharpens your creativity, decision making power and other skills. Lack of excitement can cause these to rust.
True indeed!
