January 21 is Hug Day. Created by Michigan’s Rev. Kevin Zaborney in 1986, there couldn’t have been a better date chosen for hugging people as we need lots of warmth in this cold weather.
Hugging People Feels Great
The best thing about hugging is that not only the hugged, but even the hugger feels great about the experience. I believe that hugging is one of those few expressions that actually make a complete communication. The feelings actually travel both ways. Hugging people does not leave the need to say it (though, I’ll suggest we still say). There are countless types of this physical expression and the beauty is that each one conveys a unique feeling that is registered with both the parties.
Hugging People is Comforting Them
The origins of the word ‘hug’ can be traced back to “hugga” in Old Norse, which means comforting. Hugging is one of those expressions that can make people feel better even when they are feeling very low. Hugging can lessen emotional and physical pain to a considerable extent. Do you remember Munnabhai MBBS? The “jaadu ki jhappi” (the magical hug) cured almost every illness possible. While that was in a movie, hugging is an act that can actually have miraculous results.
Medical Benefits of Hugging People
- Boosts the immune system
- Helps in curbing appetite
- Saves body heat
- Stimulates cells of the brain
Let us celebrate one of the most positive gestures this hug day, and resolve that we will be hugging at least a dozen people everyday. Spread love. The world needs it.
