He was all of violet
With hues of blue
Some pink dots
And golden streaks too
With valor and longing
He gazed at the sky
Knowing he was always
Meant to fly
It must have been
His luckiest day
A li’l girl came
All ready to play
She looked at the kite
With her loving eyes
Imagined him having
A rendezvous with the skies
She took him home
And kept him safe
Caressed him, admired him
And then one day…
Excited, she tied the string
And lifted him in her hands
That’s when the pain arose
She felt its blistering pangs
She had always known
It was love at first sight
How could she now let him
Take his first flight?
What if he tore?
What if he was lost?
Wasn’t he too precious
To bear such a grave cost?
So she tore the strings
To relieve her fears
And made him heavier
By soaking him in tears
His colors soon bled
With all her crying
He knew he could now
Never even dream of flying
They sacrificed adventure
For the fear of pain
Gave up the skies
For everything mundane
Never did they sing again
Nor feel the wind’s draft
They lived and smiled
But alas! Never again laughed…
Are we doing this to the ones we love the dearest?

It’s a brilliant poem and I loved every word of it. The nuances are so beautifully woven and makes you ponder deeply about the last question you’d posed: Are we doing this to the ones we love the dearest?
thanks Swapna… always such thoughtful comments

Oh my God ! Awesome poem…I’ve got no words left at all to praise it…beyond all limits…this kite touched every nook and corner of the petty Heart!
Thanks Shivangi… you are really very generous with your compliments
You are my new best friend!!! Made me feel on top of the world
Such a lovely poem that bespoke of how we as a parent tend to limit our children’s flight to success for fear of less time, love and proximity. I admired the way you have woven all these thoughts and the eventualities into the poem….awesome!!
WHY priya , why ?? ….. the write up before it and this poem… it pricks ….
The real test of people is not the choice between letting go or holding on… both need courage and strength. The real test is to know when to let go and when to hold on!
when to let go and when to hold on??? …. yeah that’s really a test …
yeah… i’m the worst at that!! Anyway, thank you so much for reading my posts… It makes me feel GREAT when someone reads my ramblings and even takes the time out of their busy schedules to respond. Thanks!
