Seematti: Beliefs Around Silks

seemati-seematti-silks-seematti-sareesThe word ‘Seematti’ means ‘beautiful girl.’ But in Kerala, the word is synonymous with the ‘Temple of Silks.’
Nearly every Malayali has visited Seematti, the saree store, at some point of time.

Seematti Sarees: Uniquely Beautiful

In Kerala, people say that memories are woven at Seematti because special occasions are celebrated with a visit to Seematti and purchasing something beautiful and unique from there. In every weaver’s family, several generations of weavers have passed down the ‘tips and tricks’ of the trade. These weavers are fine artists and designers. No two Kancheevaram sarees look alike in design because each piece is woven differently on purpose.

Seematti Silks: Beliefs Associated

Recently, in an exclusive interview to a leading Malayalam magazine, Vanitha, Beena Kannan, Chairman, Seematti Silks, shared a belief that has influenced her deeply.

  • A belief of the weavers that Beena Kannan strongly endorses is that for every Kancheevaram saree that is made, there is a girl who is destined to wear it. Like a muse that motivates artists, this belief motivates the weavers to create unique designs.
  • Interestingly, like the weavers, the farmers in the villages believe that for every food grain that is produced, the name of the person who is destined to eat that grain is written by Nature in invisible letters.
