The Secret of Happiness

I am happy. Do you want to know the secret of happiness? I am conscious of my happiness. This makes it simple for me to pursue it. Happiness is something so sacred that it is not meant to be a secret. I believe that all of us know how we can be happy. We are born with the ability to recognize as well as realise it.

Moments make life. When I recap my journey till this moment, I can clearly see all the moments in which I was happy. If I try to understand the commonality among them, the secret of happiness is revealed. I feel the same way at this very moment. This is the present in which I am living. I am happy. :)

The Secret of Happiness: Happiness Multiplies

What is happiness? Knowing the answer can change your life, even if you are happy already. You may be spending quality time with your child. Do you know how important that time is for you? Do you know what it means to your young one? You may be happily married. Have you found more reasons for love as your relationship has grown? Do you know your place in her or his life? You may be happy with a well-paid and satisfying job. Have you ever thought how you can go beyond that satisfaction and fill your work with passion? Do you understand how good a job is when you have put in your best effort? Once you have got the answers to these questions, you will feel happier than before in all such situations. Feel what you do, be conscious of it and your happiness will increase geometrically.

  • Happy people multiply :) When you are happy, it shows. People can see it when you do anything or say something… and often even when you are saying nothing. All of us want to be happy. So, people follow those who are happy. Be it you passing on the happiness actively through words or actions, or people absorbing the key to happiness from you, more people find their way to happiness. If they understand how happiness works before following the way towards it, they will surely reach there. More importantly, it is necessary that you define your happiness for yourself. Your happiness may not be the same as mine. After gaining consciousness of it, you must explore it on your own. Additionally, the positive vibes which a happy person supplies spread happiness to people around her or him.
  • Happy times multiply :) Identify what made you happy in your happy moments. In this way, you can relive those moments of happiness to the same extent repeatedly. Also, this consciousness of happiness can help you take control of your life. The decisions you take will be guided by your course of happiness. This will guarantee a happy future. Then, after several years, when your grandchildren start their lives, you would share the secret of happiness with them. This starts an altogether new cycle of happiness. It continues long after you have left this world.

Happiness is that state of being in which energy takes a positive form. This energy flows at the highest momentum when the maximum happiness is enjoyed by the maximum people for the maximum time. :)

Nice thoughts. I would like to add one more ’secret’ to the concept – searching for happiness in the past or the future often leads to not much, however, the day one learns to search it in the here and now it finds its way into your life with great abundance!

    • ankit.c says

Yes, after all, our being is in the present. The idea is to fill the present moment with happiness, be it by reliving the past, enjoying what we are doing right now or making sure that we have a happy future.

isnt your idea of happiness and secret of happiness too simplistic? i mean what if i am not happy in the first place, then how can i be conscious of it. how can i make something multiply when i dont have it to begin with. what if i dont find reason to be happy?

    • ankit.c says

A pure feeling like happiness can only be simple. Human beings, or for that matter all forms of life, are meant to be happy. You are trying to take my post as a formula. It is not. We all have our own secrets of happiness and only you can find yours. Not being conscious of your happiness is the cause of its absence. Once you become conscious of it, it will just grow.

    • Piyush Nigam says

Hey Remi – would like to add a little more to Ankit’s thoughts here:
The secret is always simple; the route to discover it is often complex. Things always look complex on the way there and that is what brings in the challenge – if you are not happy and you recognize it then that is an interesting place to be in, because this is where the journey begins. Dig deep within yourself and understand the universe that you live in to find what will make you happy and that is where the work begins to bring happiness into your life.
Happiness is not the means to an end but an end in itself. Do not look for reasons to be happy – justify actions in your life with the reason for them being the pursuit of happiness!

Long, long ago, a handsome Prince was cocooned from discovering the reality and ugliness of the real world by his royal parents. They made sure he never saw the poverty, illness and death around him and just hoped he would be happy being a prince. One fine day, he managed to venture out of the maze and realize that his world of luxury was so disconnected to the real world. It disturbed him so much, transformed his thinking and he gave it all up to find out what makes the world a place for illness, suffering and death? His choice was not to find happiness but to find the cause of unhappiness. When I read your powerful, thought provoking words, this was my first thought. The prince who had everything looked beyond happiness because he knew his happiness alone has little meaning if its not shared by others too.

In ‘Happiness Multiplies,’ your examples to trigger happiness consciousness are situational. They relate to the happiness that you feel at work, looking beyond the mundane and feeling passionate about their work/situation.

Moving forward, the post discusses how happiness becomes a source for others who can feel it too. Yes, I understand this. However, it does not become a qualifying factor to define what happiness really means, does it? Because your happiness, even when it touches and inspires others, does not stay with them 24X7 because their own pursuit of happiness takes a different course.

Next, I agree that reliving your happy moments repeatedly is important to create a positive and happy consciousness and leave a happy legacy or cycle.

To me, happiness is not related to money, work, family, or situations. I do not even seek it because its really not important in my quest for God. The great people, I’ve admired, seek the happiness of others as their own and look beyond being cocooned in their own happiness. Doing that does not make them losers or unhappy people. Of course, we all have different interpretations to happiness. I am detailing my thoughts because I really enjoyed reading this post that made me think deeply about happiness and what it means to me.

To me, happiness is simply a state of mind in the absence of unhappiness. To appreciate the importance of light, you really need to go through a little darkness. I appreciate the darkness in my life because it helped me understand why the light means so much to me. That light, however, does not define my happiness. Everything we experience need not be construed in the context of happiness as people relate to it differently.

Your happy thoughts are so well written and powerful that it definitely gets us thinking about what’s most important in life. Let the happy thoughts flow, God bless.

Your comment has enriched my post. Thank you so much.
The Prince identified the cause of suffering, not unhappiness. I believe that people know it when they suffer or when they are elated. However, they let go millions of moments that do not belong to either of these extreme categories. It is here that my idea of being conscious comes in.
I did not even try to define happiness as I feel it is useless to do so. I neither have the right nor the power to take away the fun of exploring the meaning of this wonderful feeling from anybody.
Once again, thanks for all the encouragement. I promise to keep provoking you to think with my posts in future.

Wow! Talk about multiplying happiness, I just got married and had a baby.
Now here’s my 2 bit attempt at spreading happiness:
God told the amoeba, ‘Go forth and multiply.’
The amoeba said in unision, ‘Nay; we shall divide!’
So then God said, ‘Go forth and multiply by division.’
    And so it was.

hey i am new to this site! nice effort guys!
in my opinion, happiness is a highly subjective state.. and ephemeral.. we should accept the fact that happiness is never long lasting.. it is the preceding suffering which makes a joyous moment even more sweeter! sometimes we squash our short term happiness to gain long term happiness and vice versa.. in the end it depends on the individual’s outlook!

    • Priya says

Shalini, I do not agree with your statement “we should accept the fact that happiness is never long lasting.” Is there anything more long lasting than happiness?

    • ankit.c says

Hey Shalini, I completely agree that happiness is subjective, but it isn’t ephemeral. Are you trying to see happiness as absence of sufering? That will be a mistake. Moreover, I believe once you recognize happiness in its true sense, it will stay with you forever. Thus, the first step is to become conscious of what is it that keeps you happy, irrespective of the situation you are in.

Hey Shalini – welcome to The HOB!
Totally agree with you on the fact that life has its happy moments and the not so happy moments and the cycle continues. The essential thing is to pursue it consistently.

Hi Ankit. That was really a positive thought. I second it.
