The Power of The Vedas

The word ‘veda’ means knowledge. The Vedas, in Hindusim,  constitute one of the most important sources of law. Many Hindus ask why the Vedas, a spiritual treatise, should have anything to do with laws for Hindus. Sometimes it makes no sense at all, isn’t it?

The Vedas in Hinduism

However, we know very little about the Vedic philosophy to pass judgments on it. While some scholars say that it belongs to the pre-1500 BCE date, there are many scholars who state that the Vedas date back to several thousands of years before the 1500 pre- BCE date.

From a brief tryst with Buddhism and other forms of ‘liberal’ religions, Indians have succumbed to being magnetized by anything that defies and sometimes, blames the Vedic philosophy for all that has been perverted by Hindu fanatics in the recent years.

Some of India’s most worshipped spiritual icons, such as Adi Shankaracharya, Paramahansa Yogananda, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi, practised and validated the power of the four Vedas. The truth is that I don’t know much about the Vedas at all.

The Vedic Philosophy and the Quest for Truth

Personally, my quest for truth begins at a novice’s spiritual level but there are some essential facts that I have learned about the Vedas from my spiritual experiences in life:

The Vedas constitute the highest form of spiritual energy when it is chanted in the form of sound vibrations. The power of the Vedas, when chanted in the right way, is unparalleled in exorcising our negative energies and bringing us closest to the very purpose of human existence, namely, merging the mind and the body seamlessly with the consciousness of the soul. This wealth contained in the Vedic philosophy was validated by many famous personalities from other countries such as Henry David Thoreau, T.S.Eliot and Leo Tolstoy.
