Ask any Christian about his religion and he will tell you about the advent of Jesus Christ and the associated Christian beliefs. A Muslim will tell you easily about the Quran and explain why it has been badly interpreted. However, if you ask a Hindu about the importance of the Vedas in Hinduism, you will get a shrug, a nonchalant look of interest or total lack of interest as if none of it is relevant at all.
Vedas in Hinduism: What Most Hindus Think
If you ask a Hindu about the role of Vedas in Hinduism, you are likely to get one of the following three answers:
- “Look, I don’t endorse ritualistic crap because I am liberal and secular. How can any religion have so many gods anyway? Has anyone seen Shiva or Krishna in the first place?”
- “I wish I knew, but I don’t know of any good the Vedas in Hinduism have done. I think they are outdated and not really worth the effort of interpretation. So much has been lost because of the Vedas. Look at the way Hinduism is practised now because of the Vedas.”
- “We, Hindus, have been divided against each other in the name of caste hierarchy. We deserve to perish because we have no unity amongst ourselves, thanks to the Vedas in Hinduism.”
Do Hindus realize that we know nothing about the Vedas in Hinduism but still dare to point fingers at it and blame the Vedas, without valid reason or understanding?
