When is Easter?

Easter is possibly the most important Christian festival. Although Christmas is celebrated with a great deal of fervor, the significant of Easter as the central religious feast remains unscathed. According to Christian scripture, Lord Jesus resurrected from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion. His crucifixion is recognized as Good Friday and Christians celebrate his resurrection as Easter.

When’s Easter?

Easter does not have a fixed date as per the Gregorian calendar (the internationally accepted calendar in use today). It is a moveable feast, marking the end of Lent, a period of fasting, penance and prayer. Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday following the full moon following the vernal (spring) equinox.

How is Easter Celebrated?

Easter has become synonymous with happiness and joy. Easter resonated with the enthusiasm of the beautiful spring season. Easter is celebrated by:

• Dressing up in special (new) clothes

• Going to Church to offer prayers

• Lighting candles (In some regions, a bonfire is lit the previous evening to bring in Easter with pomp)

• Decorating the Church and the house with lights and flowers (particularly lilies)

• Preparing a feast (mostly enjoyed at lunch) – Easter lamb has a special place on the menu. As part of the Easter Sunday feast, adults eat hot cross buns, while kids relish jellybeans.

• Easter egg is something the celebration is incomplete without. Easter eggs are gifted and enjoyed after lunch.

• Easter bunnies decorate the baskets that hold the Easter eggs.

• Special activities – These include fun-filled events like carnivals, parades, costumes, Easter egg painting competitions and Easter egg hunt.

When’s Easter and Easter Symbolism

Why do Easter bunnies bring the Easter eggs when rabbits do not lay eggs? The fact is that eggs and rabbits are symbols of fertility. Why are rabbits a sign of fertility? Haven’t you noticed how rapidly they multiply? Early spring is a time when birds lay eggs and hares produce large litters. Easter is celebrated in spring, a time when the fertility of nature is at its peak. Hence, eggs and bunnies have become symbolic of Easter.
