About George Washington

George Washington, known for his simplicity, rejected several majestic titles proposed for his post and preferred to be called “Mr President.” Despite getting 100% electoral votes in both the 1789 and the 1792 elections, he refused to run for a third term of the Presidency. Systematic in his approach, Washington always held discussions on issues before deciding and inspired in terms of civic virtues.

About George Washington: Political Beliefs

  • A strong believer in the national union, Washington held together the army and the country during his tenure as commander in chief of the revolutionary forces and the President.
  • He was totally against foreign meddling into the affairs of the US and American interference in European affairs. He called upon the domestic politicians to serve the common good, advising them against allying with a foreign nation.
  • Although he never joined a political party, Washington supported and inspired the program of the Federalist Party. He valued the constitution and abided the rule of law.

About George Washington: Religious Beliefs

  • Although a strong believer of god, Washington believed that supernatural miracles do not happen. Propagating righteousness, he always sought for the “blessings of Heaven.” While he attended church services, records of Washington taking communion are not available.
  • Receiving baptism in the Church of England (which was the state religion at that time), George Washington served on the lay council for the local church. However, he felt that making people pay for supporting the religion they professed could disturb public order. He was also one of the earliest supporters of religious pluralism, freedom of religion and tolerance towards other religions.
