Why We Do Not Say The Words – I Love You

words i love youHave you ever been in love? Have you said the words I Love You to the person you love? A lot of times we do not express ourselves. While some people open up easily and share what they feel, others hide their feelings. There are a number of reasons for which we tend to shield our feelings from others.

Why We Do Not Say The Words I Love You

Why do we hide our feelings from people? Why do we not say the words I Love you?

Discomfort with Expressing: A lot of people are not expressive by nature. They tend to bottle up emotions, be it fear, anger or love. They feel uncomfortable expressing themselves. This has a lot to do with the environment in which we have been brought up.

Fear of the Consequences: This fear has several components:

  • Fear of Rejection: What if he/she does not love me back? This hurts our pride and feeling of self worth.
  • Fear of Change: What if our relationship changes after he/she gets to know of my love?
  • Fear of Sympathy: He/she will feel sorry for me if he/she gets to know that I am in love with him/her.

Hopelessness: Sometimes we believe that there is no point expressing ourselves. He/she doesn’t love me, so why express my feelings for him/her?

It takes a great deal of emotional bravery to say the words I Love You. You may be admitting to a person that you love him, knowing that he may not love you in return. Not hearing an “I love you” back from the other person can hurt one’s self esteem. We try to shield ourselves from this hurt by suppressing our feelings.
